Silly Question Sunday - 18 October

    Posted: 17 Oct 2020 05:10 PM PDT

Silly Question Sunday is a bi-weekly thread in which you can ask your RuneScape-related questions, including:

    • "Newb" questions from new players
    • Questions from returning players
    • Silly or nonsensical questions
    • Questions you feel stupid asking elsewhere

Of course, a question thread wouldn't make much sense without answers, so please help out with any answers that you have!

Change the penalty for dying in the wilderness

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 08:03 AM PDT

I can't find the post that originally suggested this so if anybody could give credit to the original poster who has this idea that would be great.

The idea that was suggested was that instead of having you lose your items you would instead pay double the amount you would normally pay at death and the player who killed you would receive an amount of coins equal to how much you would have paid if you died normally.

i.e. You would normally pay 1m but if you die in the wilderness you have to pay 2m and the player who killed you recieves 1m. 1m gold is destroyed in the process, the amount which would normally be destroyed.

Other ideas to improve this would be:

    - Have it so you cannot reclaim your items, you must pay for them at Death's office

    - Coins received from killing players will be referred to as "bloody coins" and will be dropped if the player dies in the wilderness. The player must leave the wilderness to add the bloody coins into their coin pouch. Edit: To clarify I am aware you cannot add coins to your money pouch in the wilderness. Bloody coins are so that Pkers can steal loot from other pkers while coins that aren't bloody wont be taken.

-Ironmen will receive no gold from killing other players but players killed by ironmen must still pay the extra coins as they normally would.

-Demonic skull triples the death cost and gives more to the killer (instead of doubling) in addition to the 500k that is dropped in its place. Instead of normal coins, the 500k will be bloody coins (see above).

-Special high risk worlds where the protect item is disabled and everyone is considered skulled.

-Items always kept on death are always kept on death, even in the wilderness. Perhaps they add to the cost of reclamation and the reward to the killer.

-Edit: Wilderness exclusive drops (I.e. stuff from revenants, searing ashes, cursed energy) are always dropped on the ground and awarded to the killer

-Edit: Untradeable items (such as achto) would have their costs adjusted to match the reward already given to the pker as it is in game. (i.e. as of now Korasi's sword would award the killer 245k, so with this update the victim would have to pay 490k to reclaim it)

I believe these changes would benefit both those who aren't interested in pvp because it would let them bring more into the wilderness and those who are interested in pvp because the reduced risk means more people will consider pvp.

Edit: A few clarifications: I do not believe this will in any revitalize wilderness pking, this update is primarily meant to make the wilderness safer while still retaining some of the risk vs reward factor without completely removing the wilderness' threat. This is a suggestion for the wilderness as a whole (PVM, slayer, skilling included) not just pkers.

Edit 2: Yes some people will still bring only three items, get killed and award the killer nothing. This won't affect anybody in that scenario. If they have wilderness exclusive resources, those will be dropped (see above).

With an influx of new players from Steam, can we do something about skull tricking and luring?

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 03:00 AM PDT

Look, I've played for 15 years and it's unlikely at this point that I'd get lured / skull tricked by anyone, regardless of how complex the skull-trick is.

NEW PLAYERS on the other hand, they have no chance.

I was fighting Stryewyrms the other day and some fanny's decided to stun me in wildy and have 10 of their friends run around franticly with massive pack mammoths in hope of me missclicking on one. I didn't missclick because I knew their plan, a new player would of had no idea and could of possibly lost everything they owned.

Imagine if a new player spent 3 months building their wealth, to go to wildy and lose everything to some scummy skulltricker.

@Jagex - Please can you review the wildy & help prevent these things from happening before we lose players you are working so hard to bring in?

Hit one of my all time goals!

Although relatively tiny compared to other players, I finally hit my goal of reaching a 1B bank. This just includes my pvm equipment. Now to save for ascension crossbows and sink some money into getting the mutated and greater abilities for pvm.

    New to RS3

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 08:40 AM PDT

So I play osrs on and off and was turned off rs3 because of the hate it got from 2007scape reddit. But when it came on steam, I gave it a go and wow. The tutorial was pretty sick and doing starter quests was pretty cool too. It felt like I playing an elder scrolls game but with a runescape twist. I feel like I should make an ironman and restart. Thoughts?

Does anybody miss when RuneScape was more medieval and less fantasy?

    Posted: 17 Oct 2020 08:29 PM PDT

Before the particles, wings, pets, over-the-top overrides.

One of the biggest things that drew me to RS when I was younger was the medieval aspect of the game. Since then it's become more of an extreme fantasy game, and sometimes it's a little tacky and off-putting

    Game integrity Change NEEDED

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 09:48 AM PDT

Alright, nobody wants to hear it, but we all know its true... Ed3 Trash runs. Stop this. With all the new players coming into the game, these trash runs will completely ruin their gameplay and give them unrealistically high expectations and never teach them anything they will need. They will just be 99's in combats with basically zero idea how combat really works. Let alone the amount of gp that will be gained per account. We just need to relocate the loot to the boss's average loot tables to make it equal to or even less than gp/hr with trash runs.

I, on my iron, often will put on full rune(necro when im on p2p), dragonehide, or mystic, som pots and food and go killing. mostly i only find bots true. but when i find a pker also killing bots that thrill of "shit can i take him" & "fuck it go big or go home right?" is some of the best. no AI you just repeat over and over with. we all know the sign, we all got the warning, so why all the wildy hate?

    "Take-all" Bandage table

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 08:05 AM PDT

[REPOST] With the Steam release, I thought it a good time to bring this thread back: New to P2P or returning after a long break? Wondering about quests? Look no further! (This thread is not designed to be read in its entirety; Read the beginning and see)

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 08:33 AM PDT

    Yo!

Some of you might recognize this as a repost. So far it's been well-received with each repost though, and with the Steam release there's been a massive and welcome influx of new players, so I thought I'd pull out this bad boy again!

This post is divided into three sections -- The "Highly-Advised Quests" section (more or less for "must-do"s), the "Recommended Quests" section (for quest recommendations based on the content itself versus based on the rewards), and the "Final Thoughts and Further Resources" section (in that order, naturally). I figure this way, this entire post will be better divided, more clearly organized, and overall less overwhelming to digest. Feel free to read as much or as little best suits you, your account, and your knowledge of the game!

(A quick note about the "Highly Advised Quests" section: Some of the quests listed here are advised mostly for their experience rewards. Obviously if you've already achieved a high level in the skill in question, and the experience reward won't help much with it, the emphasis behind the advisement for that quest's completion is pretty much entirely gone.)

    == HIGHLY ADVISED QUESTS ==

    I recommend immediately doing:

    • Waterfall Quest
    • Fight Arena
    • The Grand Tree
    • Tree Gnome Village
    • Holy Grail

and once you have enough QPs,

    • Dragon Slayer

For their combat skill XP rewards.

    I recommend:

    • Death Plateau
    • Troll Stronghold

For access to the God Wars Dungeon, which is a huge part of the game for members.

    I recommend starting:

    • Recipe for Disaster
    • Dimension of Disaster

A note about these two: THEY ARE NOT MEANT TO BE COMPLETED IN "ONE GO." The entire point of DOD and ESPECIALLY RFD is that ANYONE can start them, but only fairly experienced players can complete them. That's the point of having so many subquests beneath one quest that each have different, increasingly more difficult requirements. As you continue throughout your RuneScape career and inevitably are forced to do more questing, you will find that you will unlock more and more of each of the subquests for each of these 2 quests.

As far as starting them specifically: DOD is linear, and the next subquest can only be started once the last one is complete. With RFD though, you'll want to start off by doing the introduction, and then the Goblin Generals' subquest. This will get you to 9 Farming.

    At that point, I recommend:

    • The Lost City
    • Fairy Tale Part I: Growing Pains

For the Farming XP reward and, more importantly, the Magic secateurs. This will get you to a decent Farming level to start off with, so you don't have to be raking weeds for a few levels and can get right into the actual Farming. As for the Magic secateurs, what they do is yield you more of a crop as you harvest it, given that you're wielding them when harvesting or you've placed them in your toolbelt (easily the better option of the two). It doesn't sound like much, but in the long run, especially accompanied by the Greenfingers aura, it makes a BIG difference.

Soon after you become a paying member, I recommend completing the following:

    • Stolen Hearts (if you haven't already as a free player, so that you can then do the next two)
    • Diamond in the Rough
    • The Jack of Spades

For access to Menaphos, a mid-level hub with a reputation system that future you will be thankful that current you started chipping away at it as early as you did. It also has a bunch of other content that I'm sure is great but unfortunately that reputation system has been taking up a lot of my time so I don't know too much about most of the other Menaphite content yet. Some high-end stuff is also in Menaphos/unlocked by The Jack of Spades (to my understanding) (for example, the player-owned Slayer dungeon, requiring 99 Slayer), but that will probably become more relevant to you when you reach those higher levels. Finally, these quests also serve as the foundation for the ongoing Desert quest series.

Another solid goal to tackle earlier on is revisiting:

    • Broken Home

While it's now a free-to-play quest, some rewards remain members-only. Specifically, the Asylum surgeon's ring is currently tied for the second-best in-slot strength bonus out of every all-class ring, and on top of that it's got the best adrenaline-saving ability of all ring-slot items. (Plus, Broken Home is a genuinely fun and well-executed zero-requirement horror-genre quest with fairly unique [but enjoyable] gameplay mechanics, so I'd say it's worth revisiting anyways!)

As you progress through your RuneScape career, you'll want to chip away at the following quests:

    • Plague City
    • Biohazard
    • Underground Pass
    • Regicide
    • Roving Elves
    • Mourning's Ends Part I
    • Mourning's Ends Part II
    • Within the Light
    • Plague's End

For access to Prifddinas, the high-level skilling/almost-everything hub.

    I recommend:

    • Eadgar's Ruse
    • My Arm's Big Adventure

After completing Death Plateau and Troll Stronghold, for their nice Herblore XP rewards.

    I recommend:

    • Smoking Kills

For access to the Slayer Reward Points system. Especially in later levels, these become crucial to Slayer and making it go more smoothly for you, not to mention they unlock the Slayer Helmet and plenty of other useful things (like more toolbelt slots and more control over your Slayer assignments!). Slayer, in turn, again - especially in later levels, is a great moneymaker, particularly for those who don't like bossing/suck at bossing/don't want to boss.

JUST TO CLARIFY: You already get points for completing Slayer tasks before doing Smoking Kills, however, not only can you not spend them until completing Smoking Kills, but furthermore, the amount of points you gain is halved until you complete Smoking Kills.

    I recommend:

    • Jungle Potion
    • Shilo Village

For access to Duradel, the Slayer Master, who is the first real good Slayer Master who assigns real good tasks that can start giving you a decent income.

    I recommend:

    • Song From the Depths

As a particularly quick & easy quest that will ease your pain with killing the Queen Black Dragon (for when you get to that appropriate level), as it increases your damage output against her. She is a great moneymaker for beginner-bossers (especially considering she can only be solo'd), and, last I checked, yields ~5m/hour.

    I recommend:

    • The Fremennik Trials
    • Throne of Miscellania

For access to your own personal Kingdom that you rule, which will yield resources for you to profit from selling.

    I then recommend:

    • Royal Trouble

For full access to the personal kingdom feature.

    I recommend:

    • Icthlarin's Little Helper
    • Contact!

For access to Sophanem and its bank, which in turn opens the doors to Pyramid Plunder, which boasts some of the best Thieving XP rates in the game (until high-level Safecracking).

    I recommend:

    • The Dig Site
    • The Tale of the Muspah
    • Defender of Varrock
    • The Curse of Arrav
    • Desert Treasure
    • The Temple at Senntisten

For access to the Ancient spells and curses, a crucial part of membership. I then recommend:

    • The Light Within

For full access to the Ancient spells and curses.

    I recommend:

    • Lost City
    • A Fairy Tale I - Growing Pains
    • A Fairy Tale II - Cure a Queen

For access to Gielinor's moon, Zanaris, and more importantly, to the Fairy Ring network. I then recommend:

    • A Fairy Tale III - Battle at Ork's Rift

To unlock the ability to use the Fairy Ring network without requiring a Dramen Staff or Lunar Staff. While many of RuneScape's transportation and teleportation methods have become obsolete because of Lodestones, Fairy Rings, due to how widespread they are, maintain a level of usefulness that I think justifies including them in this section of this guide. Not only that, but just as importantly, they are easily accessible - There is a fairy ring just a short run north from the Yanille Lodestone; as well as one even closer to the Fight Caves entrance (which can be easily teleported to using the Tokkul-zo); and once you've reached Level 94 Invention, the Portable Fairy Ring can be discovered, granting access to the Fairy Ring network from anywhere in the RuneScape universe.

    == RECOMMENDED QUESTS ==

To catch up with the game's lore and the current Sixth-Age storylines, I recommend the following quests in the order below:

    • The World Wakes
    • The Death of Chivalry
    • Missing, Presumed Death
    • One of a Kind
    • Fate of the Gods
    • The Mighty Fall
    • Heart of Stone
    • Dishonour Among Thieves
    • Hero's Welcome
    • Nomad's Elegy
    • Kindred Spirits
    • Children of Mah
    • Sliske's Endgame
    • Evil Dave's Big Day Out
    • You Are It
    • The Needle Skips
    • Curse of the Black Stone
    • Desperate Times
    • Desperate Measures

If you'd like to continue unraveling the Desert's mysteries that began in the aforementioned quests to unlock the city of Menaphos and continued in the quests to unlock Sophanem and its bank, I recommend:

    • Dealing With Scabaras
    • Spirits of the Elid
    • Missing My Mummy
    • Crocodile Tears
    • Do No Evil
    • Our Man in the North
    • 'Phite Club

If you enjoy a great story, with immersive gameplay, cool characters, and delightfully shocking plot twists and turns, I recommend:

    • In Search of the Myreque
    • In Aid of the Myreque
    • Darkness of Hallowvale
    • Legacy of Seergaze
    • The Branches of Darkmeyer
    • The Lord of Vampyrium
    • River of Blood

If you enjoy a funny story, with outrageous plot points and characters, I recommend:

    • Cold War
    • Hunt for Red Raktuber
    • Some Like It Cold
    • Back to the Freezer

If you enjoy a clever, witty storyline with cheesy characters and intriguing points, I recommend:

    • Rum Deal
    • Cabin Fever
    • The Great Brain Robbery
    • Rocking Out
    • A Clockwork Syringe
    • Pieces of Hate

If you enjoy a story with a little bit of everything -- lots of culture, some drama, a dribble of romance here and there, just enough comedy to maintain a baseline light-hearted mood, decent rewards overall, even a gradually building sense of impending doom... as well as a general Viking/Norse theme and the broader story surrounding the aforementioned player-run Kingdom of Miscellania, I recommend:

    • The Fremennik Trials
    • Horror from the Deep
    • Throne of Miscellania
    • Mountain Daughter
    • Royal Trouble
    • Lunar Diplomacy
    • The Fremennik Isles
    • Olaf's Quest
    • Dream Mentor
    • Glorious Memories
    • The Tale of the Muspah
    • Blood Runs Deep
    • Hero's Welcome

If you enjoy stories with an elegant simplicity to them, on a smaller scale, about nothing more than the tragic history of one small family and the boogeyman-esque monster that haunted them, I recommend the two-part series:

    • Spirit of Summer
    • Summer's End

For a larger-scale story that simultaneously has few installments, is respectfully self-contained and deals with slightly more isolated threats, with puzzles that are just challenging enough without being too challenging, I recommend:

    • Quiet Before the Swarm
    • A Void Dance
    • The Void Stares Back

For one of the most well-received complete storylines in the entire game with a fantastic finale, I recommend:

    • The Lost Tribe
    • Another Slice of H.A.M.
    • Death to the Dorgeshuun
    • Land of the Goblins
    • The Chosen Commander

For a very well-received standalone quest, complete with stellar voice-acting, all-around magnificent gameplay, and some hefty post-quest rewards (I'm looking at you, 60K crafting XP and enhanced God books!!), I recommend:

    • One Piercing Note

While most Dragon weapons require a specific quest to be completed for the ability to wield them, Dragon weapons aren't what they used to be and can pretty much be ignored at tier 60 with few or no real issues. Regardless, completing the quests required to wield Dragon weaponry was historically a milestone, specifically the quest that rewards the ability to wield the Dragon Scimitar. Nowadays, a scimitar isn't really different from a longsword or a battleaxe anyways, but back in the day there was a difference and it was generally accepted that the Scimitars were the best way to go. If you're interested in that sort of thing -- historical milestones -- I recommend:

    • Monkey Madness

and/or any of the other several quests that other Dragon weapons require (the full list can be found by hovering over "Dragon weapons" at the level 60 mark in the Attack skill guide). To be fair, many of them also have respectable experience rewards, and that may also be valuable to you! You can find out that specific information easily in the corresponding quest guides.

If you are a returning player and want to be greeted by new-but-familiar content quest-wise, or a newer player but are still interested in RuneScape's origins, I recommend:

    • Gower Quest

It is a quest celebrating 15 years of RuneScape, released in 2016, and developed by the Gower Brothers (RuneScape's creators and Jagex' founders), all three of whom have now left not only RS3, but Jagex as a whole, for different ventures (Andrew has begun a new company, Paul is doing something but I don't remember what, and Ian [who may technically have been too young to be considered a "founder" and "creator," but is definitely still so spiritually and in all other manners] left the OSRS team for a spot at his brother Andrew's new company).

Finally, if you're looking for the quest that is widely regarded as RuneScape's best quest, or the quest that is both an optimal milestone by which to measure your worth as a quester and that will also make you feel amazing for having completed it, or the quest that most challenges you on many levels (pun intended), or the quest that is, at its core, one of the most integral parts of the RuneScape lore -- a keystone and centerpiece to the story of the overall world of Gielinor...

    I recommend:

    • While Guthix Sleeps (and all of its prerequisites)

For maximum bragging rights and eternal glory on top of all those other things, though... Complete it, along with Ritual of the Mahjarrat (arguably RuneScape's second-best quest, and the pinnacle of RuneScape's longest, greatest, and most famous quest line) afterwards, and all other Fifth age quests before doing any Sixth-age quests (Possible side effects include: Partial or complete loss of sanity; heightened sense of elitism; and inappropriate investment of time into a fictional world's lore, story, and characters.)

== FINAL THOUGHTS AND FURTHER RESOURCES ==

Furthermore, I would recommend using the page at https://runescape.wiki/w/Quests/Experience_rewards to further expand your list of quests to do, to better include any XP rewards you're particularly interested in (What Lies Below, perhaps, for that nice, easy, and low-level RC reward?). It's overall a very useful page for checking what quests you can do to take a break from training a skill and yet still gain experience in it. :)

That's about it from my point of view, but definitely look into all of these quests, specifically their rewards, and consider doing them all (in time, at least) (mainly the ones in the "Highly Advised" section, though). They are pretty much all crucial to getting the most out of the P2P gameplay/experience. I should probably say though, that I may have left out some prerequisites in some cases, and only listed the main quests in a series. The Temple at Senntisten, for example, as well as Desert Treasure, and their listed prerequisites, also have several non-listed prerequisites of their own, that are less so part of the same story and therefore I elected not to include them.

(Also, While Guthix Sleeps has an intimidating amount of prerequisites that were not listed. Duh.)

    Alright, that's all.

Good luck, happy 'Scaping, and welcome to the wonderful world of membership. :-)

P.S./Side note: If you're looking for a more in-depth look at the order in which you should complete all your remaining quests and reach your remaining quest skill level requirement milestones on your account based on your current stats and what quests you've already completed, click here. Thanks to /u/darrenswhite for that!

A couple other players (yo /u/lucien15937 and /u/Sheepsaurus) have created extremely in-depth tools for the optimal order in which to play content in the game from scratch all the way until you've acquired the Quest Point Cape (QPC), the Taskmaster Emote, the Completionist Cape, and the Completionist Cape(t).
