    Petition to bring Alis back

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 07:35 AM PST

Not only is it a common and harmless trope, it plays a role in RuneScape quests...
Also, let's not make parallels between real life humans and RS humans. If this was an attempt at avoiding potential negative feelings, it failed, as I certainly have bad feelings about time and effort being wasted in a way that disrupts lore (the thing I play RS for).

(I haven't yet checked what the Karamja/Aris/... change is and if it affects lore, but if it does, please revert it as well. I don't think I'm the only one that cares about the story and worldbuilding...)

Jagex, if you really want to be about diversity, you need to execute today's changes to OSRS too!

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 12:31 PM PST

If you don't, you're just a bunch of hypocrites.

Thanks jmods for bringing politics into one of the few places I had left to escape from it

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 01:26 PM PST

Literally nobody was talking about how the name Ali offended them. This came so far from left field that when my clan mates told me what was going on I thought they were joking.

It is absurd that you felt the need to change 20+ year old NPC names because a few people didn't read/do the quests to find out why so many people are named Ali.

RS3 is a FANTASY world, but it seems not even Gielinor can escape the never ending drone of modern day politics.

My disappointment is immeasurable, and my day is ruined.

Edit: nobody watches Reviewbrah I guess. I'm not THAT upset.

    The Feud quest is broken

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 07:25 AM PST

Here's quick rundown of this quest:

    1. PC meets Ali Morissane who coerces him to find his nephew 'Ali' in Pollnivneach because he needs help with his shop
    2. PC heads to Pollnivneach and tries to find out where to find this 'nephew Ali'. Unfortunately, pretty much everyone in the city is named 'Ali' and so he tries to get some information from tavern patron (coincidentally also Ali). This "Drunken Ali" pretends to know where to find Ali in order to get more beers. PC gives him beer in exchange for informations, but it ends up going nowhere as the drunk is just trying to get more beer. "Drunk Ali" mentions that maybe he has been kidnapped by Bandits or Menaphites who are feuding
    3. Since the leads are very bad, PC tries to negotiate with Menaphites. They say that some Bandits have stolen camel from them, but then Bandits say the same. PC decides to end the feud by giving both groups one camel each, so that both groups are satisfied. Unsurprisingly, both groups get their camels and they're still not satisfied and they demand 10 more camels, so the PC decides it's time for more radical actions - wiping out either group. PC joins Menaphites, does few tasks for them to gain trust and then finds out that Menaphites are actually Menaphos Exiles and that they strive for world domination. He promptly beats the Menaphites and goes to the Mayor or Pollnivneach.
    4. "Ali the Mayor" complains because Bandits and Menaphites were terrorizing the city, but there was fragile balance so Pollnivneach didn't suffer as much. Now that Menaphites are gone Bandits have free reign and are terrorizing the city. Because of this Player promptly wipes out Bandits as well.
    5. After wiping both hostile groups the PC returns to "Ali the Mayor" and asks him about Ali Morrisane's nephew. Mayor exaplains that he was a shady merchant and that "he and his 40 lackeys were exiled".
    6. Player returns to Ali Morrisane with the news, but upon explaining everything realizes that he has been played and manipulated by Ali Morrisane. It turns out that Ali Morrisane is actually "Nephew Ali" and he's in "scamming ring" with many other Ali's.

TL;DR: Ali Morrisane scams you by asking you to find imaginary Ali, which is quite a issue because of naming convention in Pollnivneach

Now, you may ask, why is everyone in/from Pollnivneach named "Ali"?

    Here's an explanation from wiki:

Ali is a common name in Gielinor, especially in the Kharidian Desert region. Its use became common when a mayor of Pollnivneach wrote in his will that his fortune was to be left to 'Ali'. When no legitimate contender surfaced, a huge number of Pollnivneans had their names legally changed to 'Ali' in an effort to claim it. The practice of naming children 'Ali' has since become tradition, mainly in Pollnivneach.

How exactly does all this matter?

Today's update changed names of NPCs in Pollnivneach for 'diversity reasons'. That's pretty fine, except it breaks this quest and pretty much all lore related to Pollnivneach, as well as tons of silly jokes and references. The entire point of this quest is about PC getting confused about naming convention in Pollnivneach and getting scammed as a result, but that no longer matters.

Jagex please change the name of the Man and Woman NPC's in all towns to just "Persons".

You don't know their preferred pronouns.

    Thanks.

While we're at it, please let us change the Gender of our POF Animals at the Makeover Mage.

Why was "Ali the hag" changed into "Maysa the hag", when her name is/was "Alice"?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 08:02 AM PST

    From: https://runescape.wiki/w/Transcript:The_Feud
Ali the Hag: Old hag indeed! I have a name you know!
Player: Let me guess it wouldn't be Ali would it?
Ali the Hag: Well how else would you abbreviate Alice then?

Could Aris please be renamed to Madam Aris? I think that would fit with the whole fortuneteller theme.

Next thing that needs to be modernized is The Tourist Trap quest.

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 08:26 AM PST

The area is referred to as the "Slave Camp".

There are npcs titled "Slave" there.

The robes you get from the npc are called "Slave robes".

This is obviously not OK, and simply changing out the terms to "Worker" or possibly "Interns" would fix the issue.

Jagex solves their problem in typical fashion

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 11:39 AM PST

Can we not change things that maybe one person was 'offended' over.

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 12:04 PM PST

Go ahead and apply this thinking in future content but don't go retroactively changing things cause one person on twitter said this content is 'problematic'.

For instance I'm Australian, if jagex made an Australian town where all the males are called Bazza and all the women called Shazza, I wouldn't feel offended in fact I would feel endearment and even might have a laugh.

What's to bet there are 'problematic' British jokes in RS which I'm sure there are, are you going to alter them as well. Probably not because you might think the brits can handle it but probably not other countries which is the bigotry of low expectations, which in turn is doing the opposite of what you wanted by being anti-diverse. ''We can only joke about us Brits, not those poor brown countries, they'd melt away if they heard a JOKE.''

Can we remove the knights of the round table and robin hood? I am personally offended for the Brits as an Australian that people think because of an imaginary computer game called RuneScape that all British people do is drink tea and get trapped in crystals.

Don't even get me started on Sir Tiffy Caishen.

    Don't mess with established lore.

Also one thing I'll mention there was a post with 0 upvotes commented on by Mod Raven where he said he'd change a joke dialogue in Kindred Spirits which seem to have taken place. The majority of the replies all said not to change it.

You know that shit wouldn't fly in osrs so let's not let it fly here.

One of the Karamja changes make sense but the other one? Why don't we call guards in Falador ''Armour-Clad Human on Duty'' because guard is an offensive term as that shows their occupation and therefore potentially doxxing the guard. The guard joke was sarcasm jagex, don't implement it.

Funniest thing about the Diversity changes.

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 10:32 AM PST

They make the changes to avoid potentially offending people, and in the process piss off more people than likely ever would have been offended had they just left it alone.

    I’m Arab and I’m offended

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 02:58 PM PST

Why would jagex do this to my boy Ali? I'm an Arab and I feel distanced from the game by the recent changes. Since when is runescape a SJW playground.... I remember one of the first things that attracted me to this game was that after walking for like 2minutes I found an entire section of the game world was representing my culture and I felt so at home in alkharid. If my name was Ali I'd honestly throw a fit Quit trying to be politically correct, you're not helping.
