Silly Question Sunday - 03 November

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 05:09 PM PDT

Silly Question Sunday is a bi-weekly thread in which you can ask your RuneScape-related silly questions:

    • "Newb" questions from new players
    • Questions from returning players
    • Silly or nonsensical questions
    • Questions you feel stupid asking elsewhere

Of course, a question thread wouldn't make much sense without answers, so please help out with any answers that you have!

Add Legendary Pets that are obtained from gameplay and not from MTX.

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 06:38 AM PST

This would cut down on the mild pay2win since you'd then be able to put in the efforts to be able to earn legendary pet.

To make it even sweeter, such legendary pet CANNOT be bought from Solomon's Store nor won from Treasure Hunter. You have to put in the efforts.

With the discussions about PvE auras being moved to be earned from gameplay, it would only be right to give us the ability to get a legendary pet from playing the game.

    Possible ideas:
    • Skilling Legendary Pet
    • PvE Legendary Pet (Reaper + Slayer points?)
    • Questing Legendary Pet

Simple security practices guide - avoid being hacked.

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 06:38 AM PST

Welcome, here I'm going to list numerous security practices that will help keep your accounts safe. Links to everything mentioned by name can be found at the bottom of the post.

    What you'll need:

    • 1-2 email accounts that support aliases - I like Outlook because Windows is unavoidable, if I'm going to use Microsoft's OS then I might as well use their email. I don't see the need to involve another company for my email.

    • A password manager - can suggest Lastpass, Bitwarden or Dashlane. Lastpass is cloud based and the free version is superior to Dashlane's free version. Bitwarden is not cloud based, so if you don't like the idea of the cloud then go for Bitwarden. Dashlane is feature rich but the free version is rubbish, since it only supports one device.

    • Adblocking extention - uBlock Origin suggested.

    • Script blocking extention - NoScript is a good choice.

    • Smartphone with authenticator - almost any will do. Don't lose it, it sucks.

    • Optional: Sandboxie/Windows Sandbox, Tor, Tails.

    Account security:

    • First of all, an alias is essentially a forwarding mail address, it'll be redirected to you without that person knowing where you live. In this case they have an address that cannot be logged into. You could create multiple accounts but that means protecting multiple accounts, whereas an alias's login can be disabled.

    • For the first solution you'll use one email account with at least one alias. Everything you sign up too will be under that alias. Do not sign up for anything with your real email address. Disable login for the aliases, therefore they no longer exist. You may wish to use a second alias for shifty services.

    • Solution two involves using a different alias for each important account. If you run out of available slots, make a second email and have it forward those emails to an alias on your main email. This allows you to bypass the common limit. This is probably going too far for the average person but that's up to you.

    • Aliases mean that your real email is never released to anybody, therefore nobody can attempt to recover it.

    • All accounts should use a randomly generated password (password manager) and if they support it, 2FA. A combination of aliases, 2FA, strong/random security questions and a randomly generated password is enough to keep almost anyone from even attempting to access that account. It's just not worth the effort when they're so many infinitely easier targets.

    Browsing security:

    • An adblocking extension will help prevent malicious adverts on websites that you need script functionality on.

    • A script blocking extension can be used on websites that you don't need access to scripting. It's great for torrent sites or anywhere else that you feel is probably crawling with all kinds of malware.

    • You may wish to Sandbox your browser or browse in a virtual machine. These are more advanced tips that are a little beyond the scope of basic security but they're worth looking into if you're going anywhere particularly shifty.

    • A VPN is morose for privacy than security but it's extremely useful if you're using non secure WiFi or want to protect your privacy. Other options for privacy include Tails OS and Tor Browser.

    Downloading:

    • Research your host, a simple Google search is never a bad idea.

    • Use the VirusTotal website if you're running something that you don't completely trust. It will allow you to upload and scan a file with over fifty different anti-malware tools without actually having them installed on your machine. It also has a comment section that people can use. It can easily recognise two identical files as well, which is what allows the comment section to function.

    • If you want further security, look into a virtual machine or a sandbox to prevent access to the rest of your drive.

    • I personally use Window's own Windows Defender as it does totally fine based on various testing, while avoiding allowing another company access to your entire drive. The idea is to prevent acquiring said malware in the first place, you've already made a mistake if you've run an infected program.

    Various tips:

    • Never run a downloaded file without checking the file extension. If you've downloaded a movie and you get an .exe file, it's clearly fake. If you don't recognise the file extension, Google it.

    • Pay attention while installing even trusted programs as they often have adware bundled that you'll have to un-tick the check mark to avoid installing.

    • Look for open source alternatives to software, as you know nothing is happening behind the scenes.

    • Avoid using easily socially engineered security questions. If you're using your dog's name or anything else that may come up in conversation, change it.

    • Don't click email links unless you absolutely must. If it seems too good to be true, it is. Basically only verification emails that you were expecting should be clicked, everything else can be avoided. Keep in mind Jagex will not contact you to be a moderator via your email, the invite is sent to your game inbox.

    • This might seem extremely complicated and that it'll take forever. That's not really the case though, it'll take half a day to setup and then it can be mostly forgotten. New accounts will give you the option to automatically add them. Logging in can be done on mobile with a fingerprint scan to avoid having to enter any kind of password (if you allow this.)

    • Runescape will not allow you to paste passwords into the client, so it's likely the only password you won't want to randomise. I'd suggest simply using something that you'll remember, around ten characters. Keep in mind, people do not sit entering nonsense until they crack your password. Typically they're obtained by phishing or compromised re-used passwords, that is why securing EVERYTHING is important to securing your Runescape account.

    • You can use "Have I Been Pwned" to check if your email appears on any compromised password/information databases. The good news is that if you're not using the same password in multiple places, you only have that account's password to change instead of every account that uses that password. Furthermore, typically if a service is compromised then the owner of the service will lock accounts and have users unlock them via email. This doesn't apply to other services that use that same compromised password.

Buff Daemonheim Aura 4 to be BiS at Elite Dungeons

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 09:37 AM PST

Don't really have specifics in mind, but it should have some unique interaction with Elite Dungeons IMO to make them more distinct as Dungeoneering content rather than straight PvM content. I'm grinding DG from scratch on my ironman, and outside of daily challenges I have no need to do normal floors at Daemonheim or pursue the task set for this aura. It could inherit the 5% flat damage boost across DPS ults from Mahjarrat and the stat boost from Zerker auras for a boring boost, or it could be something like enhanced damage on mobs + non-primary boss targets (crystals at Seiryu, black hands at BSD, spinners at Ambassador) for faster clear times overall. To be fair, I don't think EDs need to be buffed at all right now, rather they could use a nerf in XP/tokens or OG Daemonheim could use some buffs. But I think it would be cool to have them be more thematic in this way however that might be balanced -- and it's nice as the Daemonheim aura is the only one unlockable via in-game content to my knowledge, addressing some aurascape concerns.

A quick addition to make stone spirits slightly more valuable.

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 02:57 AM PST

So these things are spirits right, WHAT IF THE EXTRA ORE YOU GET FROM THEM WAS AUTO SENT TO THE BANK. As I said in the title this is tiny thing, but hey it might add 5 to 10 percent to there value in the long term.

    Cheers

Inessential Suggestion: Increase Music playlist's Limit cap?

Probably going to be hated a lot, but remember "Inessential Suggestion"

I like the music in this game, some I really like over the others and having to be able to save 30 out of 1281, is kinda (;⌣̀_⌣́)

Barbarian assault is dead during the spotlight?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 06:10 AM PST

I played castle wars during the spotlight and it was fairly busy but when I came back to minigames to do barb assault to kill the penance king, the official world is empty. I checked the spotlight world which is also empty and I also checked W2 and W84, the most popular worlds, which were empty. I heard it was good for AFK thaler so I'm surprised to see it dead.

Unable to set a display name

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 02:03 PM PST

Heyo, I just made an account on OSRS and when I type in a display name and click "look up name" it just resets the text box and doesn't let me type anymore till I reset the client. I've reinstalled and tried with over like 50 names consisting of random characters which all yield the same result. What's the fix for this?

    Thanks! =)

    Solomon Store Rework Idea

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 09:27 PM PDT

For many players, this probably doesn't mean much to them, but I feel that the state of the Solomon Store is out of date and still buggy and difficult to navigate.

In my wandering, I found that there is a Solomon Store location south of the GE (I use LOTD and never venture south from GE teleport anymore). Currently, when you click on it to "access" it, it redirects you to the same website all other links will send you to. I think a good update, if Jagex puts enough value in the sale of its cosmetics through the store, would be to make this location enterable as a sort of dressing room. In this location, players can see the cosmetics on their own character and have the ability to see what they are purchasing from all angles. This alone would allow players to see the content in full, instead of relying on a low quality rotating GIF that only plays half the time.

TLDR: Solomon Store should be migrated to an in-game dressing room.

    Thoughts?
