    Other Notes

    Jagex Team

Summarized descriptions based upon what was stated on stream.

Mod Jack - Runescape Game Designer

A designer means something different for Runescape than it does for other games/companies. Normally a designer writes something and then the developer develops it, but we tend to do both. My job is to supervise and review the designs rather than tell content developers what to do and my primary responsibility is the determine the storyline of the next year and year after and how everything plugs into it.

I never really played Runescape before applying to Jagex and actually called it "Runequest" in my interview. I always wanted to do game design but didn't get into it until I was 30 since I wanted to jump straight into designing. My key advice is don't think you are too good for a particular job and focus on working your way up.

Mod Ryan - RuneScape Senior Content Developer

As a developer we are given a project with a general aim/theme and tackle it. Part of it is about designing and the other about development or scripting and putting it together. It depends on the project, but for Archaeology I was determining the specifics of how the skill works while Timbo determined how sits in the game and the long term impact.

Unlike Jack I was a player before working at Jagex. I started in player support and then QA, left Jagex for a bit and game back as a developer.

    What makes good design?

Good design is specific to what you are designing for, but the fundamentals have to fit within the game world. For the most part it's about designing a toolkit for players to make use of and creating mechanics to be solved using that toolkit. There are pros/cons through doing this as it becomes a tight balance between emerging gameplay and broken/damaging gameplay.

There tends to be two design approaches to accomplishing this:

    • Start with a story/theme/world and make content that synergizes with it.
    • Start with mechanics/new tech and figuring out a lore narrative that allows you to make use of it.

Designing a new game is different than making new content for an existing game. Runescape is unique and we have to determine the identity of the game and make sure content fits that identity unless we want to change it (we don't). At the same time we are trying to make sure new content is fresh. In the past our successes/failures have been due to whether we've accomplished this.

Player expertise is also important as some players are more knowledgeable than our devs. Some of our developers are hardcore players but not all of them. Sometimes it's a challenge as we have to develop the game to meet those expectations, some want the game to change and others don't. By talking to players and understanding their annoyances we can gather ideas and try to incorporate them in the right way.

Make deaths free in times of server cluster-f

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 11:42 AM PST

    I think it's time.

When you're publically acknowledging that your servers have gone to shit but clearly cannot fix them, please, as a stop-gap, make deaths free until you can figure out a solution. Not everyone wants to bank-stand or AFK mundane skills while you figure your shit out.

    Much obliged.

Option to hide out of stock items at shops

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 05:52 AM PST

Option to hide out of stock items at shops

I get that the 0 stock is there as a guide to what a (speciality) shop buys. But since selling to speciality shops isn't a thing anymore and stock hasn't been shared amongst players for over a decade, it is kind of annoying to scroll past those items. Although the 'display only items' is helping, some shops just have a seemingly endless list of items they'll buy. So my suggestion would be this: Add a toggle for hiding out of stock items. Even if shops would get an overhaul again, this would still be a very useful option to have.

I have created a visual representation of this idea for those who'd like to see what I mean or just want to ridicule my Photoshop-skills - or rather lack thereof.

This took me way too long to create.

I would love to receive your feedback and possibly improvements on this idea.

This is not how you advertise JMod Tea Time

People were expecting Raksha so they weren't really listening to the JMod's stories. Unfortunate for the JMods, and confusing for the people watching.

It's ridiculous that such an important item for high level potion recipes has to be picked from the ground because farming it is so god damn slow. Higher farming levels should increase its yield.
