    Call for Questions - General Q&A - Wednesday August 26th 16:00 BST

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 06:03 AM PDT

    Hey all,

We'll be doing a General Q&A this Wednesday the 26th of August at 16:00 Game Time.

So if you have any questions feel free to pop them down in the comments, we'll try and find the right Jmods to answer as many of them as possible.

We would like to try something new and ask if all you of you can put each question down as a separate comment. And if you like a question to be answers to give them an up-vote, this way we should get the best questions at the top!

See you all over on twitch.tv/RuneScape on Wednesday!

Rant: This game isn't Fortnite, or Candy Crush. Don't try to force it to be.

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 10:30 AM PDT

The design choices from Jagex lately feel like when a dad tries to look up "hip" language to fit in with his children.

I understand wanting to make the game accessible on mobile. I understand putting the blinders on and ignoring that most mobile users will not be unique, but rather will be existing users engaging in afk content. As much dev time as it cost us, and as little as the results matched the goal, it's a noble goal on paper.

I first noticed what was going on with that god awful craftsman outfit a couple months ago. It is patently obvious that that outfit and many since are intended to make the character easier to see on a phone screen, with their larger-than-life details. Combined with a slew of distinctly cartoony textures lately, Jagex's direction is indicative of a desire to emulate other mobile games, but Runescape isn't like other girls mobile games. It's a desktop game you can access on your phone because technology is cool. Not a mobile game you can play on desktop while your phone charges.

Love it or hate it, this game is running out of redeeming qualities. One of them is quests and lore. Things have slowed down significantly—arguably unacceptably—but things are still good on that front. Keep doing quests like you have been, Jagex.

One of the other redeeming qualities is our shitty art style. It is shitty but it is ours. Nothing looks quite like Runescape, even as little as 2-3 years ago (let alone that powerful nostalgia hit when you log on to oldschool; that kind of interactable, living memory is almost unique to long-lived video games). Instead of preserving this, the drive is clearly to imitate games that are mobile-first. When a potential new user is browsing their app store for new games to download, Jagex wants to match the competing options for some reason instead of standing proudly apart. Be proud of and own your shitty graphical history, Jagex, it's what players adore and cherish.

I don't really care about MTX that much. As a player who has had continuous membership since 2005, you can guess my personal opinions beyond that with reasonable accuracy. But the MTX delivery style, with both Yak Track and "skill and kill to collect this week's tokens, see if you can get to 20K for all the unlocks" events, confirms to me that Jagex is trying to make Runescape a mobile game first, desktop game second. The events read like other mobile games that always have new content updates that always offer a new way or reason to pay. The 20K token events specifically remind me of those oldest Facebook games like Farmville or Mafia Wars, where it just matters how long you engage, not how actively you do so.

Jagex, stop trying to imitate. Other games should be imitating you. Instead you are acting like you know nothing about gaming, and asking for direction from 12 year olds because they are the biggest demographic of Fortnite because Fortnite is the most popular.

Look up how many video game developers—or companies in general, really—have been able to successfully change formats or platforms entirely the way it seems you intend. I can't imagine the list is very long, but it may be informative. Imitation can only get you so far.

If you really are trying to make Runescape mobile first, just tell us so we know. If not, why are you working so hard to make it look like you are? If the master plan is to become mobile first but to be sneaky about it, well, Jagex, you sneak like a 5 year old.

Build upon the legacy of success you already have instead of dying a slow death, generic and faceless.

Specifically environment art, like today's graphical rework.

Too much emphasis on textures. Polygons are bulky and cartoon-y. Looks terrible on low detail.

Surely I can't be the only one

For people saying Jagex doesn't care; relating to the unforeseen oddiments interaction with the TH promo

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 01:05 PM PDT

    They did care.

They changed the cost of keys.

They didn't care that people were getting high levels of xp very quickly from TH, they cared that they weren't paying for it.

This would've been a great event in 2016, but it's very tone deaf for 2020

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 05:16 AM PDT

As a standalone, this is a good currency event. It runs for ample time so it doesn't pressure you to buy currency. The rewards require skilling items to make. And there are pretty good consumable rewards. It even came with a graphical rework to a small area (we can argue on how well it was done).

But with how few updates we've had this year, it's very tone deaf. It feels like a cash grab. We've had more MTX events since archeology than actual permanent game updates. And one of those updates was just adding two poorly balanced pieces of jewelry. (I also can't be the only one that thought the newspost was leading to an invention update to make old MTX items, not MTX itself)

And this is on top of constant TH promotions. It's hard not to think that the game is on a sustain mode, with as much value being squeezed out as possible with all this MTX and temporary MTX events.

TL;DR: This is actually a good form of the currency event, but please read the room Jagex.

Ability to add scrimshaws to the brooch

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 08:05 AM PDT

Currently using scrimshaws have more benefits than the brooch in most gathering skills so it's not worth using with gathering skills. If the scrimshaws could be combined with the brooch then they could both be used from the pocket slot.
