    World hopping as game mechanic shouldn't be a thing

    Having different worlds is great. Players can spread across worlds to populate the game (somewhat) evenly, or they can go to thematic worlds to meet other players based on the activity/field of interest. It's also server/engine constraint and a lever to increase performance.

    Almost everyone has "Home World" or a bunch of "Favourite Worlds" they visit regularly, so there has to be system that allows players to "hop" from one world to another. It's fine when players change worlds to meet with their friends or find other similarly-minded people, or even to find empty quiet corner where they can be alone. What's not fine is trying to leverage world hopping as game mechanic.


    I think that world hopping as game mechanic is something that should go away, and here's why:

    • When hopping, player isn't interacting with game world, instead he's just fighting the game engine/UI
    • It's very tedious activity, especially if you want to check specific worlds such as worlds with non-EN language or legacy/EoC only worlds
    • It creates unnecessary strain on servers themselves
    • Makes servers more vulnerable to DDoS (speculation based on current hopping limits which were enacted because of DDoS)
    • Some events (HoM, TMS) cause large quantity of people to hop at once, severely lagging the game for everyone involved & everyone already present on the world. It's no joke when 500 players hop to your world in span of 2 minutes when you are doing intensive activities

    I understand that some players might enjoy world hopping or activities which currently rely on it (esp. Corehunting and D&Ds come to mind), but I believe that hopping as game mechanic could be removed and these activities could be retained with minor changes so that they are just as enjoyable as they are now.


    What's your opinion? Do you think that world hopping as a game mechanic has its place in Runescape's future?


    EDIT: After reading some comments it's clear that many misunderstood what I meant. I don't want to limit or restrict players from changing worlds or introduce any barriers. What I'd like to see is removal or change of content that heavily promotes world hopping.

    Hopping to find empty Slayer spot is completely fine because doing Slayer itself doesn't make you to hop, it's the contest with other players that does.

    What I'd like to tackle are activities which incentivize you to hop, such as D&D scouting, divine locations, material caches, Implings and other things.

    Please dear god leave it at this and add rewards to new content not old content. It is absolute hell getting maul on an iron, then to have to go back for root, then to have to go back for mattock. If you did all three of these things on an iron as they were released you're well over 200m hunt xp now on average.

    Mattock is fine, plz no more

    Can Tetracompasses in the Wilderness Please Not Be a Thing Anymore

    Having these sometimes point to the Wilderness is not fun, does not promote any interesting PvP activity, and doesn't even offer risk for reward. All it means is I have to dump all my gear and 1-item with the thing (which is apparently always kept on death, according to the interface) and hope some griefer doesn't kill me "for lols".

    It doesn't add anything to the experience and I think I speak for most players whom these compasses are aimed at when I say: remove the Wilderness location options please.

    Also, the casket appears to suffer from the existing bug where it's not shown as being kept on death; this is scary and needs fixing.

    Make Material Caches like Mining - Stop the fighting over Materials

    Biggest hate of playing this game for 15 years was fighting over resources, I loved when the mining and smithing update came out cause it took away the fighting and we could happily chat with other people training. Now once again I have to re-live that as I fight over materials at a material cache and no one talks to each other except to hurl abuse.

    Thought the game had evolved passed this.

    Suggestion: Managing Miscellania - Material Cache's

    New resource option for Miscellania - to farm Archaeology supplies.

    Pros:

    1. Money sink
    2. More materials for ironmemes
    3. Materials for those who cannot afford it
    4. Cheaper alternative
    5. No showdown between players for cache spot (I mean, why is that even a thing)
    6. Money sink
    7. Actually a good update to Managing Miscellania

    Cons:

    1. Old content with ancient code. New code has to be added. Might need an actual IRL archaeologist to solve the mystery of ancient rs code.
