Keys to a Successful RS3 League

    Posted: 17 Nov 2020 09:12 AM PST

Leagues have so much potential to bring new players in and create a buzz for the game. OSRS is BOOMING, the player base is high, the hype is insane and people are talking about OSRS. This is as big if not bigger than a new skill release.

For those of you that don't know what leagues are, essentially its a temporary game mode where there are massive buffs to your player character, including xp and drop rate buffs, the current OSRS league caps out at 16x XP and 3x drop rates. On top of that you get relics which have extremely busted buffs. For me my buffs are.

    • Skilling Prodigy: All non-combat skills are boosted +12
    • Last Recall: When I teleport it saves the location I teleported from and I can return right to that spot
    • Fluid Strikes: Melee attacks are 2x as fast and have 25% more accuracy, 15% less damage taken, HP regens 4x as fast
    • Unnatural Selection: Pick your slayer task
    • Botanist: Farming ticks are 1 minute long instead of 5, double produce, potion boosts don't go down with time
    • Draining Strikes: 50% chance to heal yourself by 10% of what you hit, restores prayer points by the amount of HP gained back

The gimmick with this league is that you are locked to certain areas of the map, which you unlock by completing tasks, I have Misthalin, Karamja, Kandarin, Asgarnia and Morytania

The best part about leagues is that it has something for all types of players it doesn't matter if you're a 5.6b XP main, an extremely casual player or just someone who enjoys content, there is something for you.

    • If you are a high level player, you can compete to be the first of something (first telos kill, first to max.. etc) or go for as many points as you want for cosmetic rewards and ranks
    • If you are a casual player, you can finally do the things you never would be able to do. For example I asked my friend how long it would take to get a similar ironman account to the stage that my Leagues account is and he said 1-2 years of 8 hours a day. I was able to condense 2 years of heavy grinding into 3 weeks and now I'm able to experience the content.
    • If you are someone who isn't interested in playing the league yourself you can vicariously enjoy the league by watching all the content creators smash out videos on it.

Ok now that I've got the background out of the way, lets talk about what is actually needed to make a successful

Be the right amount of Meta changing

This is probably the toughest one on the list to accomplish, but it is the most important. It can't just be a temporary game mode with boosted XP rates and drop rates while you're playing the same game. That was the big failure of twisted leagues, I never played it but watching it, it didn't feel like the game mode was that different, but they hit the nail on the head with the 2nd league.

I think the big reason why is the 3rd relic tier. In that tier you essentially have to decide which style is going to be your main style and not every boss can be easily killed with that style. For example, I did a melee Fire Cape, which isn't that impressive but I had to think of a strategy to kill the magers with melee while not getting melee smacked by them. Sure I could have ranged, but that would have made the Cape so much longer to get. Not sure how many people would pick doing a melee cape in the main game.. probably pretty low. Its that kind of new thing that makes leagues fun.

I could see the RS3 team replicating this by making the GCD on your specific style 2 ticks instead of 3 (essentially a 33% increase in damage AND adrenaline gain), so you have that same sort of draw to use your specialized style over the other ones.

No MTX and/or non-cosmetic buyable things

I think this goes without saying, but to have a competitive game mode you can't have any sort of buyable anything. If you want to justify the development time with revenue at most do something like 1 bond to access the league, but even that is pushing it as the main goal of leagues is to draw new people in and convert them to the main game.

Have multiple natural progression points people can aim for

    OSRS has done this magnificently, there are a couple of very natural progression points;

    • Get all relics ~60-80 hours of playtime
    • Get all relics then try out PvM in my areas ~120 hours playtime
    • Get all relics then Max (not sure on playtime tbh but it doesn't seem that bad)
    • Get all relics and try to get Dragon Rank (top 1%)

You don't need to be a NEET to get to final relic over the 2 months playtime even those that only have an hour a day to play will feel real progress and that they accomplished something with those accounts. While at the same time you can have some long tasks that require a lot of time to get to the top of the top to keep those that play 12 hours a fay happy and engaged.

I think a great example of this is demonic gorillas (the Tormented Demons of OSRS) Here are the tasks associated with them and thier point totals, for reference you can get about 50 kills per hour with okay gear.

    • Kill a Demonic Gorilla (100)
    • Equip a Zenyte Jewelry (250, 1/100 drop rate)
    • Kill 300 Demonic Gorilla (250)
    • Equip all Zenyte Jewelry (500, 4 in total so ~400 KC)
    • Equip a Heavy Balista (250, 4 items in total, rarest 1/500)
    • Kill 750 Demonic Gorilla (250)
    • Kill 1500 Demonic Gorilla (250)

There is a natural stopping point for every type of player, and as you go higher and higher the time per point is more and more, personally I stopped at 300 KC as I got lucky on all the rare drops and grinding out KC for points is not something I'm interested in.

Make the buffs the right amount of OP

The best part about this league is hanging around a bank or on discord and just hearing the amount of people who have tried out something new on league cause there was nothing to lose and they are buffed up a ton, the same thing can happen on RS3. Sure it might not count as getting a kill on the main game but it gives people the confidence that they can do it. If I ever play main game OSRS (doubt) I'd have much more confidence in trying out the bosses that I killed on leagues, even if I'm no longer as buffed as I was. However with that in mind you want it to still be a challenge so that the victory isn't as hollow as it might appear to be.

This league has converted me to an OSRS player for 2 months out of the year and based on the conversations I've had with mostly OSRS players over the past 3 weeks, most of them would try out an RS3 league. It could be a great way to "trick" thousands of OSRS players to like the combat system

TL;DR Leagues Good, please get RS3 Leagues, K thanks Bye

GWD2/already free instances uses up free boss instance from prem club?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2020 12:13 PM PST

i've noticed this since last years prem club had a free boss instance, if you go into an instance that's already free, something like GWD2, it appears to use up your free premier club weekly instance.

easy to test, go to an already free instanced boss then go to one that charges, you get charged.

    Title.

Currently it is not automatically deactivated upon death and if you forget to manually deactivate it you will be burning through money, since it has an upkeep cost of around 7m/h?
