RuneScape Follow Up: Discounted Key Oddment Exploit – August 24th 2020

Follow Up: Discounted Key Oddment Exploit – August 24th 2020

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 12:32 PM PDT

    Hey all,

We have been investigating an instance in which it was possible to cash out items receiving more oddments than the cost of a Treasure Hunter Key whilst on discount, allowing players to generate a surplus of oddments.

This discount became available in-game around 11:30 game time. We were notified around 18:00 of the exploit and at 19:10 we removed the discount with a hotfix.

In total we've identified around 4000 players who attempted the exploit. There was no noticeable effect on either the economy or XP gained on the day as a result of the exploit due to the low volume of users who abused the exploit.

Following our investigations we have categorised the players into three separate groups:

    • Players who may have tested the exploit will not have action taken against their account
    • 835 accounts have clearly exploited the discount and will be banned for 72 hours
    • 65 accounts have severely exploited the discount and will be banned for 14 days, they can also expect experience and Item roll backs

4 of the accounts above have been proactively so that we can do further investigations before taking a final action.

We want to take this opportunity to remind everyone that we do not tolerate bug abuse or exploits in RuneScape. We hope that the actions and communication today make this clear.

Buying most salvages from Grand Exchange and high alching them gives back more money than i initially spent. I can do it repeatedly for infinite money and magic xp. Is this a bug? Am i at risk for doing it?

So apparently buying keys is bug abuse.

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 12:53 PM PDT

I had been unaware of the 'exploit' during the TH event and was buying keys with real life money (yes I know, I'm part of the problem) and afterwards found out about the infinite keys thing from Reddit. I was admittedly bummed out I didn't get to take part, but apparently it didn't matter since Jagex decided that anyone who used a large amount of keys during this was abusing a bug?

I'm honestly constantly impressed by what on earth they're thinking. Keep up the great work.

In case it was unclear, yes I did get banned. For 14 days.

EDIT: Some proof of purchase, if they do remove any of my items I will be refunding through my bank.

EDIT2: I'm going to bed, I hope this doesn't end up with me losing everything. Have a good one folks.

Jagex fucks up and punishes innocent accounts.. Thoughts?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 12:38 PM PDT

A few days ago, popular RuneScape streamer Wazzy streamed himself opening an unlimited amount of Treasure Hunter chests by utilizing 2 independent promotions which happened to run at the same time to create a very nice combo effect.

The two promotions were working 100% as intended. The first was a discount on the price of TH keys (they were 50% off in the oddment store) and the second was a promo in which if you opened keys, every ~10 keys would give an oddment boost. The discount combined with the oddment boost meant if you discarded (traded for oddments) all rare TH items and only claimed white-rarity prices, you could keep buying keys forever.

After a few hours, Jagex removed the 50% discount promo. This was not a bug in any way whatsoever, but obviously Jagex hadn't considered how the two promos could be mixed.

Long story short most people who bought keys with this method have now been suspended for 3 or 14 days. Even though no bug was abused. Thought on this?

4taa is also an exploit that abuses game mechanics for an advantage over others. Is this safe still?

    TH exploit

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 01:02 PM PDT

So, Jagex been exploiting players with Treasure Hunter for years, especially the ones vulnerable to gambling-like practices.

Now Jagex gets exploited once, for a fuckup the company did. And what you do? Punish these people. Congratulations.

So yeah, you experienced Jagex how it feels to be exploited. What you've been doing to your players for long years now. If this won't make you disgusted about your company, there is something severely wrong with you.

    Just my opinion.

When Jagex gets exploited once the same way they've been exploiting their playerbase for years

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 01:51 PM PDT

Since when did Jagex start banning their QA team?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 01:36 PM PDT

Just got this 50% free keys promo, is it safe to use it or is this against the rules too?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 02:14 PM PDT

Jagex: You really cannot claim the 24th was bug abuse, check your numbers.

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 12:55 PM PDT

Whilst I didn't take part in it, the treasure hunter debacle was not a bug and at the very least the temp bans should have a category other than "bug abuse".

Frankly its pretty absurd that it made its way into the game. This is significantly worse than a bug, somebody made a conscious decision to have a sale, which means those numbers were definitely signed off on.

This is not a bug; no software issue was present, it was the mistake of a person. The players are not responsible for the number crunching of the MTX team or whomever decides on these numbers.

The magnitude of this mistake is frankly quite absurd. Pretty much every company on earth is able to make sure a sale and it's "refund" policy isn't exploitable. Hiding behind such a mistake by calling it bug abuse is a failure to admit a frankly laughable mistake on your part.

I don't condone the abuse of such an exploit, but don't shift blame outside, because it was very much your mistake and should be labelled as such.

Loot from getting 200m hunter/contruction and 120 crafting banked from the very generous TH promo that we all loved <3

    THERE WAS NO BUG ABUSE

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 01:10 PM PDT

A Bug is something not working as intended

Both the promotions were working as intended. and no punishments should be handed out for those of who were using the system as it was intended to be used. How is it our fault you are terrible at QA?

Hey Jagex, did you really ban this guy whose mental health took a setback due to your predatory TH promos, and then call it bug abuse?

Make it so when you click a monster from far away, your character stops at max range of your weapon

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 04:29 AM PDT

For those that don't know what I'm talking about, this might sound OP but it really isn't, bear with me.

Example: when melee Arraxor with a Nox Scythe, if you are far away from it and you click the spooder, the player automatically runs to 1 square melee distance, even though the scythe has a range of 2 squares. Make it so when you click a monster you character stops at whatever his mh weapons max range is, so 2 squares away from Rax in this case.

Am I asking for too much? This is such an easily fixable issue that's only a QOL, every game has this.
