This would be a very nice quality of life improvement, much like how we can see the invention components now.

    Death's Office: Good or bad?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 02:58 AM PST

OSRS player here and I got a question on how you guys have liked having Death's Office in the game? Does it make it easier? Is there a system that would have been better?

For those that may not know - OSRS Jmods are looking at making PvM deaths more serious(right now you have 1 hour to get to your place of death). There are a variety of ideas Jagex is looking into and one thing they brought up was replicating RS3's death mechanics using Death's Office. And I figure the best way to form an opinion is to ask those of you that interact with it on a daily basis.

A tipsy rant on mahjarrat lore

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 08:50 AM PST

I was mucking around on the art discord when the discussion turned to mahjarrat stuff. I happened to be well into a few hard seltzers at the time, so I wrote this up. Spelling errors have been included for the sake of posterity/mockery.

    ***

Mahjarrat do have emotions, even if their constant mood is more or less set on WORLD DOMINANCE or whatever (or, in the case of Wahisietel, bemused disappointment in proximity to certain members of his brethren, and when he has to be a convenient source of exposition to all these goddamn people who keep bugging him about muspahs and shit).

Now the things to keep in mind is that mahjarrat live for thousands of fucking years, they originate from a firey plane that's the broken shell of a planet eaten dry by the Elder Gods like it was a motherfucking Lindt truffle, and more or less had to consign to watching each other die due to war, conflict, and Seren having mom issues.

So between the sheer amount of time and the fact that any show of weakness would probably get them ripped to shreds faster than you can spell Wahisietel wrong seven different ways, it probably boils down to the fact that mahjarrat don't so much lack emotions as they are really fucking good at hiding them. Of course, there are some mahjarrat who show zero remorse, sorrow, or love for anything other than nuclear-level macguffins, but I digress. Here is a breakdown by individual mahjarrat. (Note I have left some out because there are a lot of these fuckers and not all of them are necessarily well-developed enough to warrant an entry.)

    Azzanadra

He's featured in a lot of fucking quests, so we have a lot to work with. In Desert Treasure he's kind of at your mercy, considering you freed him from his shitty bachelor pad the Zamorakians dumped him in. He seems genuinely shocked, fearful, and sorrowful that he can no longer hear his lord (Zaros) in his head, but he doesn't spend a ton of time moping over it, probably because he's a mahjarrat of action and also doesn't want to seem weak in front of a squishy human.

Temple at Senntisten is when you see deeper shades of this. I think Azzanadra's relationship with Zaros and his role in the empire is most strongly tied to his emotion; he's like a kid in a candy store when the purple edgelord finally makes contact with him,

When you ask him about the city that once stood where the Dig Site is, he calls it "the crowning jewel of Zarosian civilisation," only to say, "it is better you did not witness it, for it saves you the grief and sorrow of seeing it razed."

He also displays care for his fellow mahjarrat — when you tell him about Jhallan icing it up like Captain America in the north in preparation for the upcoming ritual, he says " I can only pray that he makes it through. I shall aid him where I can, as Zarosian brothers should." This might be down to him needing all the help he can get, though.

His strongest relationship is between him and Zaros. When Zaros is killed, he's clearly distraught — practically heartbroken. Lord Drakan describes him as "pale and drawn, his eyes sunken" when he confronts the mahjarrat after the Great Betrayal in The Old Blood.

In Fate of the Gods, he will totally break his composure if you give Zaros a light thingie instead of a dark thingie, because that shit apparently will fuck robe boi up. Azzanadra is nearly speechless with shock, and more or less threatens to hunt you down and destroy you if anything happens to his god because of your choice.

He also does show loyalty for his fellow mahjarrat, even outside of Zarosian lines. He's quite upset at finding out Seren had been pulling a Scooby-Doo with Mah's identity in order to direct the rituals ("And sacrificing our own kin was the best you could think of?") in Children of Mah.

The other interesting tidbit is in Sliske's Endgame, when Sliske reveals that he killed Azzandra's little brother and blamed another tribe on it. Not only did Azzanadra straight up fucking genocide-run the tribe Sliske blamed it on, but he more or less resolves to do the same to Sliske when the truth is revealed. These familial bonds aren't always present amongst mahjarrat (Just look at Wahisietel and Sliske) so he clearly loved his sibling and grieved his loss.

Finally, in the last bit of lore that started this whole goddamn essay, we have the Dev Blog for Archaeology, where Azzy (in Dr. Nabanik form) actually sheds a goddamn tear over finding a helmet of (probably) one of his fallen brethren. It's just sad, man.

    Khazard

Man, this stinky bastard has come along way since The Fight Arena quest. Fun fact: He was retconned into being a mahjarrat. Originally he was just a necromancer with a thing for gladiatorial battles, Lady Servil, and keeping slaves.

There are two instances of Khazard's tough exterior breaking. First is in the aforementioned Fight Arena quest, when you kill Bouncer, his hellhound. In the original iteration (and the OSRS) version) he calls Bouncer his "only friend," and in both versions he straight up prepares to murder you after that. And who can blame him? You killed his fucking dog. What a dick move.

The other instance is in Dishonour Among Thieves, when he makes like Jimmy Neutron's dad in that one meme and sends you to the shadow realm to find a diary of Palkeera, his mother. When you return, he's distraught; his dialogue is stammering. ("Sh-she died protecting Thammaron. A worthy death, but... it was because of me. She was weak.")

Palkeera, for her part, was also remorseful that she couldn't raise her son, indicating that the mahjarrat have a maternal instinct to them; she writes, rather sorrowfully, "I am left here with the thought of my son orphaned and alone."

Ok, go get some tissues or toilet paper or whatever. Moving on!

    Enakhra

Fuck, she is underdeveloped. There are two main things about her that we know: She probably has a thing for Zamorak (As Zemouregal mocks her for The Curse of Arrav and Dishonour Among Thieves) and calls him her "greatest love" in Postbag from the Hedge 43 (while also espousing how great Freneskae is).

"Ah, Freneskae: an ash-covered, smog and lava-filled delight. You humans would consider it desolate and harsh, a deathly place. To my Mahjarrat eyes, there is wonder there. For us Mahjarrat, life can come from death as easily as death from life... That is why we chose to follow Icthlarin, then Zaros (though I spit as I say his name), and my greatest love, Zamorak."

    Kharshai

He's an interesting case, because he was hanging out with the Fremennik for awhile after yeeting his memories and identity out the window like a crime lord becoming a house-husband. He cares about 'his people' enough to fight the dagganoths for them in Blood Runs Deep and, even after he learns about his past, says he's still willing to stay with them for their kindness. Whether this is because he's a nice dude, or because he forgot about thousands of years of brutal mahjarrat dirty laundry for a few blessed years, I'm not entirely sure.

    Misc. Shit

    • Mahjarrat deathstones. Clearly they were sad about their brethren dying; why else would they put up gravestones for them?
    • Sliske may have shown some pity for Relomia, having pulled her out of the Shadow Realm and keeping her around, even though she is kind of a terrible housemaid if you look at the state of the Empyrean Citadel. Then again, he may have just wanted a groupie. For all we know, he fucking put her there.
    • I am not counting Moia because she is half-human, though TBH I could probably write an entire other rant about her.

How is the game and Jagex doing?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 08:57 AM PST

I've played on and off for years and seem to keep coming back to the game. I always feel like I shouldn't be happy with Jagex despite coming back, and I'm not even sure why anymore. So I want to ask, what good things have happened with the game and Jagex in the past years? What was bad? What did everyone bring out the pitchforks for last time it happened?

The movement in this game is the worst

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 09:15 AM PST

Today I tried getting into runescape. I started with OSRS and then played RS3 to compare them. From a first epxerience I think RS3 has more to offer to me. There is just one HUGE thing bugging me: movement.

I click on a location and once I reach it, or even slightly before I reach it, I click on another spot, because I need to get somewhere. Sometimes I click on the minimap to move a bigger distance at once if I cant see into the distance by moving the camera. But everytime I give them game a new location input because I need to take a turn or move further, my character slows dows, wiggles around, and then starts moving in the direction.

This is EXTREMELY annoying, especially when in a town trying to move from crafting station to crafting station, which are like 10m apart. These slow walks at the start, the unnecessary wiggling around on the spot to find the correct pixel to start moving on, etc. Is this how the devs imagined the game? Have they never played anything like Dungeon Siege (best comparison towards RS3), Titan Quest or similar games? (Diablo games are a lot faster paced, so not really comparable)

Id actually like to give this game a try besides doing the paths in the first two towns, but the movement is so aggravating, im starting to utterly hate the game. Am I doing it wrong?
